Pediatric Ecmo Workshop

  • Audience Target Audience: Physicians, Nurses, Perfusionists, Respiratory Therapists, and any clinical staff involved in pediatric or Neonatal ECMO care.

Description and intended learning objectives:
This workshop will review the basic and essential concepts of Neonatal and Pediatric ECMO care in a simulation teaching environment. An emphasis on the multidisciplinary approach to care will be modeled, and key concepts of patient safety will be reinforced.

  1. Demonstrate the basic assessment of the ECMO pump and circuit
  2. Identify and describe the key determinants of adequate support using patient and ECMO parameters
  3. Determine emergent versus nonemergent scenarios during an ECMO run
  4. Describe the steps to assess adequate oxygen delivery on ECMO
  5. Explain the possible causes of abnormal coagulation status in the patient and ECMO circuit
  6. Learn to incorporate ECMO physiology into critical thinking skills to address clinical management challenges
